A member of Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s party has been beaten to death by soldiers for playing a song praising the premier, his Movement for Democratic Change said Tuesday.

Godknows Dzoro Mtshakazi was killed on August 30 in Shurugwi, 355 kilometres (220 miles) southwest of the capital Harare, the MDC said.

“Mtshakazi was drinking beer with some friends on the fateful night when soldiers based at a nearby military base came and started questioning them on why they were playing a popular MDC album called ‘Nharembozha’ (Cellphone),” the party said in a statement.

The soldiers beat up people in the bar accusing them of “fanning hatred in the community”, the MDC said.

Police say the case is under investigation.

Working across borders is always a challenge. There are cultural, language and climate differences to overcome. Dealing in more than one financial currency adds to the complexities - but is doable - but more challenging on a fundamental level is being faced with a society that values and places emphasis on things that you may not. And then there is organising an event in Africa.

It’s hard not to arrive on the scene with unbending first-world expectations and demands but you quickly learn the value of flexibility and thinking on your feet. When things are inevitably delayed, or not exactly up to par, it goes a long way to breathe, smile and simply make another plan.

Yes, they were by far the two most annoying characters in television history. I’m glad to see them gone. But, with Patchy resurrecting all the time, Locke cured of paralysis, Rose cured of cancer, and Christian Shepherd sitting around in Jacob’s cabin… Might we see Nikki and Paulo again too? Say it isn’t so! I for one am hoping the immortality theory is not true.
